So that Visby and Gotland, as well as our whole planet, will be a good place to live and work even for our children and grandchildren, we all need to take responsibility for endeavoring to care for our earth, our island and each other. This is the vision that we have been working towards ever since the von Schulman family took over the hotel in 2007.
The first thing we did was to re-model our garbage room to enable us to sort our guests’ rubbish into 17 categories. In 2008 we bought a completely electric Peugeot van. In 2009 we became Gotland’s first Scandinavian environmentally-certified (Svanenmärkt) hotel and we continuously work to become better every year.
However, it is not enough only to be on the forefront if you want to save the world. Naturally we want others to follow our example. We see this as an educational challenge and hold lectures now and then for others in our industry upon request.
We also collaborate with two sustainability consultants from Japan who visit us with their clients to learn more about work with sustainability in Sweden and on Gotland. There have been 34 groups who have visited over the years with more and more coming every year.
If you would like to read more about what we are doing, we have put together a list, based on the UN global goals. If there is anything else you wonder about, please send us an e-mail at email@example.com.

Make every drop of water count
The lovely warm summers in Visby make fresh water a limited resource. We use water-saving heads in our showers and taps which halve the amount of water used by mixing air into the water stream without reducing comfort. Since we installed these showerheads in 2009 we have saved around 600 cubic meters of water per year.
From Visby to the world
The von Schulman family has been working together with Japanese sustainability consultants Satoko and Peo Ekberg for the past twenty years. Every year they come with new groups to Visby and Hotell St Clemens to learn more about sustainability and take these new ideas with them home to Japan. Everything we do has a ripple effect and we have several examples of how ideas and practices have been taken to the other side of the world and scaled up enormously there. Here at the hotel our measures can save 600 cubic meters of water a year but globally it means a saving many times over.
Insects are vital to the existence of the many roses and apple trees in Visby. Up in the ruin’s tower we have a beehive where 100,000 bees do a fantastic job of pollinating all the flowers and trees in the neighborhood around the hotel. As a bonus we get to enjoy the golden liquid honey made from the nectar of Visby’s flowering gardens. We even have an insect hotel in our garden where all kinds of wild insects are welcome to check in.
Clean rooms and clean sea
As soon as you step out into the garden or open a window you can catch a whiff of the Baltic Sea. We want the Baltic to continue to smell like fresh foamy brackish water and nothing else. Every time anyone flushes chemicals down the drain when cleaning or otherwise, they end up in our fragile inland sea sooner or later. That is why we clean entirely without using chemicals. We use only ordinary water in spray bottles, and we find that water and a little vinegar work just fine to remove more stubborn lime spots.
Help us save a pike
Visby is just outside your door and the Baltic Sea is nearly in our backyard, making the Baltic’s fish population a special concern of ours. If you stay with us for several consecutive nights, you can make a contribution by choosing not to have your room cleaned for a day or two. Every time you make this environmentally-friendly choice, we will donate 20 SEK to the Swedish Anglers Association’s “Back to big fish” pike conservation project.
